Rinks To Visit This Winter: Skating season is almost here

December, 2016

The City of St. Albert has set a tentative date for the opening of our outdoor skating rinks, so sharpen those skates and mark your calendars for December 14th. There are a whopping 20 outdoor rinks spread out across the city, but here are 5 of the top ice surfaces to check out this winter.

Leisure Rinks:

Lion’s Park Rink

Each winter, Lion’s Park transforms into a winter recreation paradise. The centrally located rink offers quick access to downtown St. Albert, as well as the Sturgeon River trails, which means you could easily make an entire day of skating this rink, popping off to town for a quick hot chocolate or down to the river for a stroll along the banks. This rink comes with plenty of parking and a beautiful view.

Lacombe Lake

Lacombe Lake was built in the mid-1970s as a storm-water reservoir, but it wasn’t long before it became a favourite ice sheet among local skaters. The beautiful landscape that surrounds the lake means that you’ll spend more time looking around at your surroundings than you spend looking down at your feet. This rink comes complete with a heated building to change in, and its sheer size means that you’ll never feel crowded as you glide around the ice.

Hockey Rinks:

Most of the neighbourhoods in St. Albert boast their own oval hockey rinks, complete with boards. But a few manage to stand out among the rest with their changing facilities, ample parking and shelters to help shield you from the wind as you wait to get back in the game. To get the most out of your pick-up hockey games this winter, mark the following rinks down on your list: Alpine Park, Flagstone Park, Gatewood Park, Larose Park and Willoughby Park.
